Australia's captain Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the likelihood of taking part.

"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations involved, not only the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a major part. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India last month after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with setbacks in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to make the squad for the Ashes.

He mentioned that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the opening match as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the starting games in any case. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
