Mrs Prior KC added: "This year his stepson had suspicions about the situation, justifiably.
"They decided to investigate in the individual's items."
The legal counsel said materials including lubricant, Vaseline and injection devices were located, and his family member contacted the authorities about his worries.
She stated the defendant went on to conduct the "candy game" with six boys that evening - Saturday 26 July - and they were everyone unwell the next day.
"Law enforcement" had not responded by that point," she stated further.
The police watchdog, the police conduct office, had stated that it was examining law enforcement's management of the incident.
Mrs Prior explained the minors were unable to walk properly due to their condition, so Ruben's stepson notified the authorities a second time.
