Together Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a test for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it could look like conventional biological terror, but within Together resides a intense contemplation about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Debut Feature Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for over ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The narrative begins when Tim and Millie move from the metropolis to the rural area for Millie’s job. A familiar plot device, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the conventions cease. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the two discover an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a strange force begins influencing the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a slow burn fright fest, interspersing bits of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his floundering music career inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and far away from his support system. He fears the idea of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

The couple confront the kind of problems that come with any relationship over a long period. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these anxieties of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor does not come across as hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a strong argument for remaining unattached. On the other hand, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale inspire anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu at present.
